‘NOTHING’ Finds Bad Luck Brigade in Motion

Bad Luck Brigade’s NOTHING is a refreshing album that doesn’t behave like a typical hip-hop record. The Salt Lake City six-piece, formed in 2022 by Kilow and Ikaika Meatoga, double down on what’s made them stand out early on: a fully live-band approach that trades rigid structure for something more flexible, more reactive, and ultimately more alive.

Where a lot of hip-hop leans on precision and polish, NOTHING leans into feel. The record’s drums, bass, guitar, keys, and horns feel kinetic and alive, as they push and pull against each other, letting grooves stretch and moments shift.

Early on NOTHING, “THE 4LOKO MOTIVE” and “A LITTLE” carry the energy of a band locked in, sharp and driving without feeling mechanical at any point. “GET TOGETHER” widens the scope, folding in jazz and funk textures while keeping that same forward motion intact. Then “SHADED” pulls things back, opening up a more reflective pocket that gives the record some needed contrast.

As the album unfolds, the structure loosens. Songs like “JACKPOT!” and “LOVER FIGHTER” lean into that live-wire instinct- less contained, more conversational between the players. You can hear the decisions happening in real time, the small shifts that keep the music from ever sitting still.

Deliberately unpolished in places, constantly moving, and built on chemistry more than control, NOTHING feels like a document of a band choosing motion over perfection.
